Projecting to the Limelight of the News that Nobody Tells you about.

After the introduction of this new series of special news items that the media is hardly ever interested in for want of initiative, and because journalists prefer trodden grounds and the comfort zone in reporting, our first port of call will be the thanksgiving service offered for the re-election of the moderator and the induction of the newly elected synod clerk of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon..

The ceremony took place at the PCSS Buea Campus on Sunday 15 March 2020.Every media would tell you that the event was colourful, the guests of honour satisfied, the personalities in attendance happy .Granted. That is the big picture. After the wining and dining, what else? Any take home lessons. Any vital information that may change our visions in event management? Any striking aspects that may change our behavioural patterns?
That is the juicy part of our information. That is Behind The Picture

Take note that we are in Church, a place of worship, adoration, praise and thanksgiving. But see for yourself what we saw. We the non conformists in communication,we the paradigm shifters, we the vision bearers,we the believers in perfectionism.

THE CHURCH BECAME A TRADING GROUNDS FOR A VARIETY OF PRODUCTS

Traders defied or deliberately ignored the solemnity of the occasion and transformed the ceremony into a market in which a variety of articles were sold like in an ordinary market place. Their interest was more in winning over customers, using proven and age old advertising campaign techniques and tactics such as buy one take two, best quality, durability ,after sales services. Don’t ask me how true their declarations were. The most important thing was to empty their stock and fill their pockets with money. Did they care about the disturbances of their noise?Your guess is as good as mine.

Among the items sold were imported used bags and shoes commonly known as okrika
Cooked food items such as boiled eggs with pepper, dough oily nuts, ground nuts, bananas, pop corn, soft beverages, alcoholic drinks etc.
Surprisingly a good number of Christians or should we call them service participants spent 2/3 of their time at the sales points.

BIG COMPANIES ALSO CONSPICUOUSLY INSTALLED STANDS TO COMMERCIALIZE PRODUCTS.

A glaring example was the renowned Colgate company that erected a stand at the entrance to the ceremonial grounds ,precisely after the main gate. There, a young lady in her twenties dressed in the colgate bright red colours, wearing a beautiful smile, with pure white teeth, invited Christians to buy her products

A VARIETY OF OTHER ITEMS WERE SOLD WHILE THE SERVICE WAS IN FULL GEAR.

Other items sold included locally made drums, African shirts posters, books ,sanitizers. Those selling went about freely, talking or just making noise in a bid to attract customers who of course were Christians in attendance preferring to buy than to listen to the sermons which was supposed to be their raison d’etre in church.

CHRISTIANS ABANDONED THE PREACHING AND PRAISE WHORSHIPINGTO ANSWER PHONE CALLS IN CHURCH.

Every phone call set some Christians to their feet. They sprung up from their chairs, pushing their way through other attentive and interested worshipers to attend to callers. Some spent more time answering calls than listening to the pastors. The question is whether or not they were,in the first place supposed to come along with their android phones displayed with pride to add class and distinction. The irony is that not only one person but many gave room to this behaviour.

WEARING THE CORONA VIRUS PROTECTIVE MASKS OR NOT.

About 1% of the participants wore protective masks during this celebration which brought together close to 4000 persons including the creme from the Cameroon political capital Yaounde. Surprisingly some persons wore their mask under the nose, thus leaving the nostrils wide open. A question came up to know what was beeing protected and whether the wearing of the mask was rather fashion oriented. Besides do they know that protective masks have a life span of three hours average?.So how could those who presumably protected themselves be free from being infected by the corona virus just in case, given that the ceremony lasted for about 6 hours excluding time allocated for the meal?.Or would it be that they came with a pack of masks?

SPECIAL INTENTIONS OR THE HIDDEN AGENDA.

Be pleased to know that some others came with special intentions otherwise known as the hidden agenda that could only be deduced from their attire. They were seen dressed to kill, in sparkling make ups, defying eye lashes, excessively long brazilian hair, pointing high heels.

The concluding rhetorical question is to know if all these behavioural patterns are associable and compatible with church circles.
